THE HORROR GENRE
A2 MEDIA
Horror films are unsettling films designed to make an audience feel scared, make them panic and feel a sense of dread, as the nature of a horror film is to invoke natural reactions to fears that are being portrayed in film. Horror films generally centre on the forbidden, dark side of life, and portray our nightmares, bringing our fears of dismemberment, the paranormal, our revulsions and even a fear of loss of identity to the surface. The horror genre can also include the idea of God and, most commonly, Satan, playing with the beliefs and worship of different God's and the idea that Satan and God are two extremes, but when placed in a horror film, they can become one and the same - the theme and idea of exorcism.
Whatever dark, primitive, and revolting traits that both attract and repel us are featured in the horror genre. Horror films are often combined with science fiction when the villain or monster is related to the misuse or corruption of technology. The fantasy and supernatural film genres are not synonymous with the horror genre, although thriller films may have some relation when they focus on the revolting and horrible acts of the killer/madman, which can relate to real life events or things that man is capable of showing.
