RESULTS FROM 22 RESPONSES
HOW OLD ARE YOU?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/9562938.jpg?334)
As you can see from the pie chart, the majority of the people who completed the questionnaire were under 16, closely followed by 16-18 year olds. The minority of people who completed the questionnaire were 19-21 year olds and ages 22 and above. This therefore tells me that younger ages were happier to fill out my questionnaire and take the time to answer the questionnaire.
The fact that under 16's and 16-18 year olds were more likely to fill out my questionnaire gives me a slight indication of who my target audience may be - young adults who have some kind of interest in the horror industry or the genre itself.

DO YOU LIKE HORROR MOVIES?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/909655.jpg?332)
As you can see from the pie chart, the majority of the people who completed the questionnaire liked horror movies and an equal amount didn't like them or didn't mind them. This therefore tells me that the horror genre is widely accepted within society and people are more likely to watch horror films than any other genre.
IF YES, WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE HORROR GENRE THAT YOU LIKE?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/5377407.jpg?334)
10 people like horror genres because of the entertainment value, but 10 people also skipped the question because they either didn't know or didn't like horror films. 3 people said that the horror genre gives them the chance to express emotions which other genres can't, which surprised me as I imagined that a few more people would have chosen this option because it makes the viewer really think about their answer. 4 people offered a written answer as they chose other and the written replies were; "Just like the scare and sometimes can be funny", "Gives a rush", "Storyline" and "I like to be scared! Adrenalin". These answers give me more of an idea as to what people really like about the horror genre, and as you can see, two people stated that the horror genre gives them a 'rush', which is a feature which the horror genre is most aclaimed for.
IF NO, WHAT IS IT ABOUT HORROR FILMS THAT YOU DISLIKE?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/6917056.jpg?315)
As you can clearly see, the majority of people who answered my questionnaire decided to skip this question, with just 5 people answering. As you can also see, more people who didn't like horror films didn't like them because they are immoral/too scary. This tells me that the horror genre is successful with its marketing and products because that is the intention of many, if not all, horror films. 2 people said that they dislike horror films because they lack realism, which tells me that some people prefer a horror film to be realistic - more of a psychological and thriller sub-genre would suit these people than either the supernatural or slasher.
WHICH SUB-GENRE OF HORROR WOULD YOU DEEM MOST EFFECTIVE?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/4497354.jpg?311)
All 22 people who filled out my questionnaire answered this question, and as you can see, the vast majority say that psychological horror films are the most effective, and slasher films are the least effective, with only 1 person choosing this option. As mentioned in the last question, this tells me that people prefer a more reality-based horror film than an eccentric one, which most slasher films are. 6 people chose supernatural films as the second most effective and 4 people chose thriller films as the third. These statistics clearly support my theory that more people prefer a horror movie which could actually happen and one which has an effect on the viewer, which psychological films are renouned for.
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING WOULD YOU SAY IS ESSENTIAL IN A HORROR FILM?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/1389657.jpg?308)
Again, all 22 answered this question, with 13 choosing suspense as the most essential feature in a horror film. Mystery was second, with 9 people deeming it essential. A main character who survives (3 people) and the featuring of at least one killing (1 person) were both seen as least essential, which tells me that the people who answered my questionnaire think that an affect on the audience is key to a horror film, as suspense and mystery are two main attributes of horror films, and 2 which bring the most emotion.
OUT OF THE FOLLOWING, WHICH MOVIE DO YOU PREFER AND WHY?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/737456.jpg?302)
This question was one which had a more varied response, including 17 written responses, which allows me to analyse people's choices more effectively. 'The Omen' and 'The Woman In Black' were both chosen by 6 people as the most popular horror film. Responses to 'The Omen' were as follows; "Classic eerie feel", "The only other one I've seen is Woman In Black (in theatre) and it was scary. I prefer a movie I'd like to see again", "Damien is a brilliant mastermind" and "It's believable". Responses to 'The Woman In Black'; "there is a good story behind it and I like jumpy films", "It had a lot more atmosphere", "I haven't seen the first 2 yet, but it scared me", "read the book." and "Lots of suspense". Responses to 'Halloween' (5 people chose); "Pure classic", "it is interesting and the storyline is captivating", "suspense" and "It's brutal and has lots of suspense". Responses to 'Paranormal Activity' (4 people chose); "crazy stuff happens and a lot of it is funny", "makes you jump" and "it's not scary". These responses tell me that people like films because ofthe suspense and the feeling that they get due to this.
WHAT MAKES A HORROR FILM UNSUCCESSFUL?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/1918142.jpg?298)
13 people said that an obvious storyline or if the storyline was too predictable was the most unsuccessful feature in a horror film, which shows that a large portion of the people who answered my questionnaire prefer mystery and suspense, which has been a constant factor throughout the answers. 7 people said that a lack of realism was the second most unsuccessful feature of a horror film, which again supports the idea that people prefer a more realistic storyline. 6 people said that too much gore makes a horror film unsuccessful, which again supports the idea that viewers prefer a more realistic sub-genre like psychological and thriller movies. 4 people said that a slow start makes a horror film unsuccessful, which applies to most films. However, a slow start in a horror film can most likely lose the viewers attention and therefore not interest them.
WHEN WATCHING A HORROR MOVIE TRAILER, WHAT GRASPS YOUR ATTENTION THE MOST?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/9874014.jpg?302)
11 people said that when the storyline isn't given away too much, they are more grasped by a horror movie trailer, which relates to the above question. 8 people said that the use of music grasps their attention the most, which is common with all movie trailers, as music plays a big part in setting an atmosphere and letting the viewer know what genre the movie is before the trailer is finished. 4 people said that the use of editing grasps their attention the most when watching a horror movie trailer, as the editing is another factor of a horror trailer which plays a big part in setting an atmosphere and a mood. 2 people said that the use of colours grasps their attention the most, and I am not entirely surprised because when compared with the use of music and editing, colours don't play a very big role unless they are very bright or very dark.
HOW DO YOU USUALLY GAIN ACCESS TO FILM TRAILERS?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/3/13639830/7395799.jpg?295)
12 people chose both YouTube and Adverts via cinema as how they gain access to film trailers, which doesn't surprise me as they are the two main ways in which I myself gain access to film trailers. This immediately makes me remember that the majority of people who answered my questionnaire were in their teens, as teens use YouTube more frequently than older people, so they are exposed to more film trailers than on TV . 5 people said that they gain access to film trailers via TV and 1 person said that they go on a specific film website to view trailers. At a guess, I would imagine that the website in question is http://www.imdb.com/, which is renouned for giving reviews on films and offering the chance to watch trailers for almost every film they have archived.
